This issue belongs to the early Augustan aes coinage reorganized under the restored senatorial mint authority — the tresviri monetales, here L. Surdinus serving as one of three magistrates responsible for bronze production around 15 BC. The S C formula on these pieces was not mere convention; it reflected Augustus's careful political theatre of restoring traditional Republican mint structures while maintaining de facto control over gold and silver.
Surdinus is otherwise nearly invisible in the historical record, known almost exclusively through his coinage.
