Tetradrachms of Roman Egypt were struck in a debased billon alloy controlled entirely by the imperial administration — private exchange of Roman silver for Alexandrian currency was prohibited, effectively trapping the local monetary system inside Egypt's borders. By the reign of Severus Alexander, the silver content had fallen well below ten percent, though the coins continued to circulate at face value by imperial decree. Year Six of his reign corresponds to 226/227 AD, the dating reckoned from the Egyptian regnal calendar beginning each Thoth.
