Year 6 of Gordian III's reign corresponds to 242–243 AD, a period when the young emperor — still only in his late teens — was on campaign against Shapur I of Persia. The Alexandrian mint continued striking tetradrachms throughout, maintaining Egypt's separate monetary system under Roman administration. The billon content by this point had declined sharply from earlier imperial issues, a debasement trend the Alexandrian mint had been quietly pursuing since the Severan period.
Dattari 4932 places this among the more routinely encountered Gordian III Alexandrian types, though Year 6 pieces are modestly scarcer than the prolific Year 5 output.
