| Obverse description | Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Maximian facing right, depicted from the rear in three-quarter perspective, as characteristic of Alexandrian tetradrachm portraiture of the Tetrarchic period. The emperor wears a laurel wreath and military cuirass with paludamentum. The surrounding Greek legend reads Α Κ Μ ΟΥΑ ΜΑΞΙΜΙΑΝΟϹ ϹΕΒ, identifying the emperor as Augustus. The die work is bold, with strong relief typical of the Alexandrian mint workshop. |

| Reverse description | Standing figure of Elpis (Hope) advancing to the left, rendered in long flowing drapery, her right hand raising the hem of her garment and her left hand holding a flower, in the canonical Alexandrian personification of the goddess. A six-pointed star appears in the field to the left or right as a mint control mark. The regnal date L Β (Year 2) appears in the field, corresponding to the second regnal year of Maximian as Augustus at Alexandria. The overall style is characteristic of the late third-century Alexandrian billon tetradrachm series. |
