| Obverse description | Facing bust of Emperor Justinian I, helmeted and diademed with pendilia, clad in elaborate imperial cuirass with military paludamentum. The emperor holds a long cross-sceptre in his right hand and a globus cruciger in his left, rendered in a stylized, frontal Germanic interpretation of Byzantine prototype. The effigy is framed by a beaded inner border, with a partial Latin legend distributed around the periphery reading D II IVSTINIANAVS DP AVC. The execution reflects the crude yet vigorous die-cutting characteristic of Germanic bracteate imitations of Byzantine solidi from the Justinianic period. |
