Tetricus I ruled the Gallic Empire from 271 until its collapse in 274, when Aurelian defeated him at the Battle of Châlons-sur-Marne. Unusually, Aurelian spared both Tetricus and his son rather than executing them — Tetricus was reportedly made corrector of Lucania, a comfortable administrative posting in southern Italy.
By the time this coin was struck, the Gallic mint at Cologne was producing debased billon so poor in silver content that it barely qualified as anything beyond bronze. The SALVS AVGG legend invoking the health of two Augusti reflects the co-rulership with Tetricus II, elevated to Caesar and then Augustus in the final years of the breakaway state.
