Postumus founded the Gallic Empire in 260 AD after capturing — and almost certainly executing — Salonius, the teenage son of Gallienus, at Cologne. His regime was not a secessionist fantasy but a functioning state with its own senate, consuls, and a mint output of remarkable regularity. The MONETA AVGVSTI reverse type, of which this is a variant, signals deliberate messaging about monetary legitimacy at a moment when central Roman coinage was debased to the point of public distrust.
RIC V.2 74 is well-attested but the specific obverse die pairing with this reverse legend variant occasionally surfaces as a cataloging discrepancy between RSC and RIC attributions.
