Obverse description Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Postumus facing right, rendered in three-quarter forward perspective (bust type A). The emperor's radiate crown, emblematic of the antoninianus denomination, is clearly articulated, and the drapery and cuirass are finely detailed. The encircling legend appears in Latin capitals around the periphery of the field.

Additional information

Postumus founded the Gallic Empire in 260 AD after capturing — and almost certainly executing — Salonius, the teenage son of Gallienus, at Cologne. His regime was not a secessionist fantasy but a functioning state with its own senate, consuls, and a mint output of remarkable regularity. The MONETA AVGVSTI reverse type, of which this is a variant, signals deliberate messaging about monetary legitimacy at a moment when central Roman coinage was debased to the point of public distrust.

RIC V.2 74 is well-attested but the specific obverse die pairing with this reverse legend variant occasionally surfaces as a cataloging discrepancy between RSC and RIC attributions.
