The composition symbolises the divine patronage of the two ruling Augusti under the Diocletianic tetrarchic theology, with Jupiter (Iovius) protecting Diocletian and Hercules (Herculius) protecting Maximianus. A mint-mark appears in the field and the exergue carries the officina and purity mark XXI, denoting a 1-in-20 silver alloy. The reverse legend encircles the scene along the coin's border. |
