| Popis rubu | Jupiter, the king of the Roman gods, stands facing left in the field, nude but for a chlamys draped over his left shoulder and falling behind him. He holds an eagle-tipped sceptre or long staff upright in his right hand and a thunderbolt in his lowered left hand. The figure is rendered in the idealized classical tradition, with a beaded border encircling the design. The reverse legend IOVI AVGG is distributed around the field, invoking Jupiter as the divine patron of the two reigning Augusti, reflecting Diocletian's ideological programme associating himself and Maximian with Jupiter and Hercules respectively. A mint mark appears in the exergue. |
