Mehmed II overhauled the Ottoman monetary system following the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, and the reform coinage issued from 875 AH reflects deliberate standardization across newly consolidated mints. The akçe had been debased repeatedly under his predecessors; his reform pushed fineness back up and fixed the weight at a level intended to compete directly with Venetian and Genoese silver in Aegean trade.
Multiple mints struck to this standard simultaneously — Edirne, Kostantiniyye, Bursa among them — making mint attribution on unattributed examples genuinely difficult without die study.
