Ghazi Giray II reclaimed the Crimean throne in 1588 after Ottoman intervention unseated his predecessor, Islam Giray II, and this issue dates to that turbulent restoration year. The Gezlev mint — the port town known today as Yevpatoria — served as a secondary striking facility to the primary Bakhchisaray operation, and its output during Ghazi Giray's reign reflects the khanate's dependency on Ottoman monetary policy while maintaining nominally independent coinage authority.
Ghazi Giray was also a poet of some reputation, composing under the pen name Gazayi — an unusual distinction for a ruler whose reign was defined largely by raids into Muscovy and conflict with the Safavids.
