Ahmed I took the throne at thirteen and immediately faced a treasury exhausted by simultaneous wars on two fronts — the Long Turkish War against the Habsburgs and the Celali revolts tearing through Anatolia. The akçe had been debased so aggressively through the late sixteenth century that by his accession it contained a fraction of the silver it had carried a generation earlier, fueling chronic inflation and public distrust of the coinage.
This piece dates to the opening year of his reign, sultanic year 1012 AH.
