The empress is depicted in the typical provincial Roman style, with finely rendered drapery visible at the truncation. | Beschrijving keerzijde | Zeus Laodiceus standing to the right, holding an eagle in his outstretched hand and a long sceptre, facing the cult-statue of Artemis Ephesia, who stands frontally between two stags. The juxtaposition of the two civic deities embodies the Homonoia (concord) between Laodicea ad Lycum and Ephesus. The reverse legend, distributed around the field, names both cities and proclaims their alliance. The composition is rendered in the monumental style characteristic of large provincial bronzes of the Severan-Philippi period. |
