The palm tree, a symbol of victory, dominates the central composition. The shield bears the inscription Α ΝΕΙΚ ΡΩΜΑΙΩΝ, proclaiming the first victory of the Romans, while the surrounding field legend identifies this as a civic issue of Ephesus. The composition reflects Ephesian pride in Roman military triumph during the early Parthian campaigns of Marcus Aurelius. |
