| Reverse description | Nike, the goddess of victory, stands to the right with one foot raised and resting upon a globe, in the act of inscribing a shield that is attached to a tall palm tree standing in the field. The palm tree, a symbol of victory, dominates the central composition. The shield bears the inscription Α ΝΕΙΚ ΡΩΜΑΙΩΝ, proclaiming the first victory of the Romans, while the surrounding field legend identifies this as a civic issue of Ephesus. The composition reflects Ephesian pride in Roman military triumph during the early Parthian campaigns of Marcus Aurelius. |
