| Beschrijving voorzijde | Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Gordian III facing right, rendered in three-quarter view from the rear, displaying pauldron and scale armour detail. The emperor's youthful effigy is portrayed with characteristic short hair beneath a laurel wreath. The encircling Greek legend reads ΑΥΤ ΚΑΙ Μ ΑΝΤ ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΟϹ ϹΕΒ, distributed around the bust between a beaded inner border and the coin's edge. The flan is broad but irregular, typical of provincial bronze coinage struck in Lycia during the mid-third century AD. |

Patara was the principal city of Lycia and seat of the Lycian League's federal assembly, but its civic bronze issues under Gordian III also reflect something more immediate: the city's role as a major harbor and naval base, which gave it both the wealth and the administrative standing to strike large-denomination bronzes of this module. The Aulock Lykien reference corpus remains the standard for attributing these civic issues, and VII.2 #2180 is among the better-documented Pataran types of the reign.
