| Reverse description | Nike, the personification of Victory, stands facing right with her right foot raised and planted upon a helmet resting on the ground, her figure rendered in dynamic pose. She inscribes with a stylus a round shield that is fixed upon the trunk of a palm tree to her left, a compositional motif symbolising Ephesus's preeminence among the cities of Asia. The palm tree, a recurring emblem on Ephesian civic coinage, rises prominently in the field. The encircling Greek legend proclaims the city's title as first of Asia and invokes Nike by name. The overall execution reflects the ambitious large-module civic bronze issues struck under Elagabalus at the Ephesus mint. |
