The Koinon of Cyprus — the island's federal assembly of cities — held the rare privilege of issuing bronze coinage in the emperor's name under Roman provincial administration. Cyprus had been a senatorial province since 22 BC, governed by a proconsul, and the Koinon functioned as both a religious and civic body whose coin issues were tied directly to the imperial cult. Claudius's reign saw renewed attention to provincial loyalty structures following the chaos of Caligula's final years.
Bronze provincials of this size from Cyprus are frequently found with significant encrustation — the island's soil chemistry is unforgiving.
