| Beschrijving keerzijde | Two deities stand facing one another in the field: at left, Asclepius, the god of medicine, stands facing with his weight on his serpent-entwined staff (kerykeion of healing), clad in himation; at right, the nude figure of Hermes stands to the left, holding a purse in his outstretched right hand and a caduceus in his left. The pairing of Asclepius and Hermes is characteristic of Pergamene civic coinage, reflecting the city's renowned association with the cult of Asclepius. The reverse legend encircling the field records the name of the local magistrate (strategos) and affirms Pergamum's prestigious status as first city and thrice neocorate. |
