The obverse legend encircles the effigy in Greek characters, identifying the emperor by his full titulature. The portraiture reflects the characteristic provincial Roman style of the mid-third century, with the laurel wreath rendered in fine relief. | Descrizione del rovescio | Homonoïa (concord) type depicting Apollo of Hierapolis standing to the right, holding a plectrum in his right hand and a lyre in his left, facing Asclepius standing to the left, who holds a serpent-entwined staff (caduceus). The two divine figures, representing the patron deities of Hierapolis and Pergamon respectively, are shown in a formal confronted composition symbolising the civic alliance between the two neocorate cities. The reverse legend in Greek is disposed around the field, proclaiming the concordia between the Hierapolitans and the Pergamenes. The flan is broad and irregular, characteristic of large provincial Æ issues of the period. |
