Within the intercolumniation stands the cult statue of Artemis Ephesia facing front, wearing a kalathos (polos) upon her head and flanked by lateral supports in the characteristic polymastos type. A crescent symbol appears to the left of the temple and a star to the right, emphasising the celestial associations of the goddess. The composition underscores Ephesus's proud status as a twice-neokoros city, honoured with the imperial cult. |
