背面描述 An agonistic prize table depicted in three-quarter perspective, its legs elaborately carved, supports two inscribed stephane (wreath crowns) — one identified as the Gordianea and one as the Valeriana — referencing the civic games celebrated at Aphrodisias under these imperial names. Behind and rising above each crown, a tall palm branch is visible, the universal symbol of victory in athletic contests. The ethnic legend of the city, split across the field and below the table, identifies the issuing community. The composition is enclosed within a beaded border, and the magistrate's name appears in the peripheral legend.

附加信息

Aphrodisias enjoyed an unusually privileged relationship with Rome, having received grants of freedom and tax immunity — confirmed repeatedly from Augustus onward — that made it one of the more assertive civic minters in Caria. The magistrate name preserved in the obverse legend, Iulianus, is otherwise unattested in the city's epigraphic record, making this issue a rare administrative trace. The epithet ΓΟΡΔΙΑΝΗΑ embedded in the civic title reflects an honorific adopted under Gordian III that Aphrodisias retained through the joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus — a deliberate civic choice to maintain prestige associations with a dead emperor.
