| Reverse description | Emperor Trajan, laureate and togate, standing upright in a quadriga drawn by four elephants advancing to the right, holding an eagle-tipped sceptre in one hand and a branch in the other. The elephant quadriga is a powerful triumphal motif associated with deified rulers and military conquest, here employed to celebrate Trajan's Parthian victory. The date regnal legend L Κ appears in the field, denoting the twentieth year of Trajan's reign according to the Alexandrian calendar. The composition follows the standard Alexandrian provincial format for large bronze issues commemorating imperial triumphs. |
