Year 20 of Trajan's reign fell in 116–117 AD, the period of his farthest eastern conquests — Mesopotamia, Armenia, and briefly the Persian Gulf. Alexandria's mint was prolific under Trajan, producing dated regnal-year bronzes that allow historians to sequence imperial events with unusual precision. This piece belongs to the final year of that output; Trajan died in August 117 at Selinus in Cilicia before ever returning to Rome.
