The composition reflects the civic pride of Antioch ad Maeandrum and its devotion to Capitoline Zeus, a common theme in Asia Minor coinage of the Severan era. The reverse legend naming Zeus Capitolinus identifies the principal deity of the local cult. The scene is rendered with the bold, somewhat summary style characteristic of Carian provincial bronzes. |
