To the right stands Athena, helmeted and draped, facing left, in a composed, static pose befitting her role as civic patron goddess of Smyrna. The composition alludes to the homonoia (concord) between Smyrna and Athens, as indicated by the reverse legend. The legend ϹΤΡ ΑΙ ΗΡΑΚΛΕΙΔΟΥ ϹΜΥΡ ΑΘΗΝΑΙ ΟΜΟ is distributed around the field, referencing the strategos Herakleides and the civic concordance theme. |
