Heracles strides vigorously to the right, the Nemean lion skin draped around his neck, his raised right hand wielding his club while his left hand grasps a prancing horse by the bridle. In the lower field behind him lies a fallen horse together with the prostrate body of Diomedes, the Thracian king whose flesh was fed to the mares. The regnal year date L Ϛ (Year 6) appears in the field. The composition is energetic and characteristic of the mythological reverse types favoured by the Alexandrian mint under Antoninus Pius. |
