| Beschrijving keerzijde | Standing nude statue of Themistocles, the legendary founder-hero of Magnesia ad Maeandrum, depicted in frontal pose turning left; he holds a patera in his extended right hand over a lighted altar, while his left hand rests on the hilt of a sheathed sword at his hip. At his feet to the left lies the forepart of a recumbent hump-backed bull. The scene references the civic cult of Themistocles, who according to ancient tradition was honoured with heroic rites at Magnesia. The reverse legend names the local magistrate Dioskourides Gratos and identifies the city as the Metropolis of the Magnesians. |
