Aphrodisias held a privileged position in Roman Asia Minor — the city received formal grants of freedom and immunity from taxation, confirmed repeatedly by emperors from Augustus onward, in part because of its fierce loyalty to Rome during the civil wars of the late Republic. The magistrate name recorded in the legend, Stratonikos, anchors this coin to a specific local administration during the reign of Trajan Decius, whose two-year rule ended at the Battle of Abrittus in 251 AD — the first time a reigning Roman emperor died fighting a foreign enemy.
