The effigy displays the emperor's characteristic curly hair and beard rendered in the Antonine style. The obverse legend in Greek characters runs around the periphery of the flan, identifying the emperor by his imperial titulature. She wears the kalathos (modius-shaped crown) atop her head, symbolising abundance and civic prosperity. Her right hand rests upon a large steering rudder, an attribute emblematic of Alexandria's pre-eminence as a maritime and commercial centre. The date legend L Γ (regnal year 3) appears in the lower field, within or below the couch structure, consistent with the Alexandrian dating convention. |
