Ephesus held the title of neokoros — temple warden of the imperial cult — twice by the Severan period, a status aggressively lobbied for and bitterly contested among the great cities of Asia Minor. The designation ΔΙϹ ΝΕΟΚΟΡΩΝ on this piece reflects that dual wardenship, which Ephesus used as a trump card in the constant civic rivalry with Smyrna and Pergamon over precedence and honorific rank.
