Hierocaesarea, a small Lydian city whose claim to fame rested almost entirely on its ancient sanctuary of Artemis Persike, minted this piece during the final months of Marcus Aurelius's reign — he died in March 180 AD. The magistrate named in the obverse legend, Artemidoros, is otherwise unattested outside of coin evidence, making issues bearing his name the primary documentation of his tenure.
