| Reverse description | Two deities stand in confronting arrangement within the field: to the left, Artemis stands facing right, dressed in short chiton, actively drawing an arrow from a quiver at her shoulder while holding a bow in her other hand; to the right, a nude Zeus stands facing left, holding an eagle in his outstretched right hand and a long transverse sceptre in his left. The pairing of Artemis and Zeus reflects the principal civic cult of Hierocaesarea, where Artemis Persike was especially venerated. The reverse legend, recording the name of the local archon Artemidoros, encircles the composition. |

Hierocaesarea, a small Lydian city whose claim to fame rested almost entirely on its ancient sanctuary of Artemis Persike, minted this piece during the final months of Marcus Aurelius's reign — he died in March 180 AD. The magistrate named in the obverse legend, Artemidoros, is otherwise unattested outside of coin evidence, making issues bearing his name the primary documentation of his tenure.
