Synnada, a Phrygian city best known in antiquity as the source of the prized *marmor Synnadicum* — the white-veined purple marble that Roman emperors imported at enormous expense for palace floors and bath complexes — produced civic bronze coinage under named local magistrates, here the prytanis Claudius Attalus. The prytanis was the presiding officer of the civic council, and naming him on the coin was less an honor than a dating mechanism; it anchors this issue within a specific administrative year of Antoninus Pius's reign.
