Metropolis in Ionia was a minor civic center whose coin output under Trajan was modest and is now poorly documented — the reference corpus remains incomplete for many provincial issues from this conventus. What distinguishes this piece administratively is the ethnic legend ΠΟΛΕΙΤΩΝ, the genitive plural identifying the issuing civic body, a formula used by smaller Ionian communities asserting municipal identity within the Roman provincial framework without the full apparatus of a neokorate or league affiliation.
The conventus of Ephesus handled judicial and administrative business for a wide sweep of Ionian cities; coins like this one likely circulated within that regional economy rather than traveling far.
