In her extended right hand she holds a patera, while her left elbow rests upon a tympanum (ritual drum). At her feet, a lion reclines to the left, the goddess's customary attribute and sacred animal. The reverse type reflects the strong local veneration of Cybele in the Ionian region, and the encircling legend asserts the civic pride of Metropolis as a preeminent city of Ionia. |
