Ephesus held the title of neokoros — temple warden of the imperial cult — twice by the Severan period, a status aggressively lobbied for and bitterly contested among the great cities of Asia Minor. The inscription ΔΙϹ ΝΕΟΚΟΡΩΝ was not civic pride in the abstract; it was a legal and political claim, displayed on coinage to assert rank in the eternal rivalry with Smyrna and Pergamon over which city would take precedence at the conventus.
Septimius Severus granted and confirmed neokorate honors as instruments of loyalty-buying following the civil wars of 193–197.
