A lion, the goddess's sacred animal, is shown recumbent at her feet to the left. The composition is a standard votive type attesting to the cult of Cybele at Metropolis in Ionia, rendered in the characteristic flat relief of provincial Asiatic bronze coinage. The encircling Greek legend names the local strategos Paulinus and the civic authority of the Metropolitans. |
