Nicaea was one of the most prosperous cities in Bithynia under the Antonines, and its civic bronze coinage under Marcus Aurelius reflects that confidence — the city funded an ambitious building program during this period, including reconstruction work following seismic damage that had periodically disrupted the region. Provincial bronzes of this city and reign are relatively common in the archaeological record, suggesting heavy local use rather than hoarding.
