| Reverse description | Pan, the rustic deity, depicted standing to the left, wearing his characteristic conical cap (pedum) and clad in a short garment. He holds a branch in one hand and a wineskin in the other, attributes emblematic of his pastoral and Dionysiac associations. To the right stands a small ithyphallic herm of the bearded god Priapus, also oriented to the left, serving as a divine companion in the field. The ethnic legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ appears in the exergual area or around the design, identifying the issuing city of Nicaea. |

Nicaea was one of the most prosperous cities in Bithynia under the Antonines, and its civic bronze coinage under Marcus Aurelius reflects that confidence — the city funded an ambitious building program during this period, including reconstruction work following seismic damage that had periodically disrupted the region. Provincial bronzes of this city and reign are relatively common in the archaeological record, suggesting heavy local use rather than hoarding.
