Issued under the proconsul Kominius Proklos during Claudius's reign, this bronze belongs to the civic coinage of the Koinon of Cyprus — the island's federal assembly, which retained the privilege of striking bronze under Roman administration. Cyprus had been a senatorial province since Augustus reorganized it in 22 BC, which is precisely why a proconsul, rather than an imperial legate, appears in the coin's inscription. The island's copper resources made it strategically significant; the Latin word cuprum derives directly from Cyprus itself.
