At her feet to the left lies a wheel, a standard attribute of Nemesis symbolizing fate and retributive justice. The reverse legend in Greek encircles the field, with the denomination mark Ε (five assaria) incorporated into the legend. The style is consistent with the civic bronze coinage of Odessos under Gordian III. |

Odessos (modern Varna, Bulgaria) operated as a Greek colonial foundation on the Black Sea coast that retained remarkable civic autonomy well into the Severan and Gordian periods, continuing to strike bronze in its own name long after many neighboring Moesian cities had reduced or abandoned local production. The Ε on this piece denotes a denomination within the city's own internal tariff system — a municipally-controlled value hierarchy that operated independently of the Roman imperial bronze coinage circulating alongside it.
