Odessos (modern Varna, Bulgaria) operated as a Greek colonial foundation on the Black Sea coast that retained remarkable civic autonomy well into the Severan and Gordian periods, continuing to strike bronze in its own name long after many neighboring Moesian cities had reduced or abandoned local production.
