Sardis held the title of neokoros — temple warden of the imperial cult — twice over by the Severan period, a distinction fiercely competed among cities of the Asian conventus and reflected in the ΔΙϹ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ legend. The second neokorate at Sardis was granted under Caracalla, though coins invoking the title appear already under Septimius, likely in anticipation or as a retrospective civic boast.
