Sardis held the title of Neokoros — temple warden of the imperial cult — twice by the time Gordian III came to power, a status the city had fought hard to secure and advertised aggressively on its coinage. The "Β ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ" designation marks this as issued under that double grant, a civic honor that carried real financial and jurisdictional weight within the Roman province of Asia.
Gordian III was thirteen years old when proclaimed emperor.
