The imperial effigy is set within the coin field with the Greek legend disposed around the periphery. The portrait displays the youthful features typical of Gordian III's official iconography, with paludamentum visible on the shoulder. Additional information

Sardis held the title of Neokoros — temple warden of the imperial cult — twice by the time Gordian III came to power, a status the city had fought hard to secure and advertised aggressively on its coinage. The "Β ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ" designation marks this as issued under that double grant, a civic honor that carried real financial and jurisdictional weight within the Roman province of Asia.

Gordian III was thirteen years old when proclaimed emperor.
