| 裏面の説明 | Turreted head of Tyche, the personification of the city's fortune, facing right, wearing a mural crown (turreted kalathos) upon her head, a common iconographic device on civic coinage of Bithynian cities to represent the protective deity of Nicomedia. The surrounding field carries a circular Greek legend naming the proconsul L. Mindius Pollio, under whose authority the coinage was issued, reading ΕΠΙ Λ ΜΙΝΔΙΟΥ ΠΩΛΛΙΩΝΟΣ ΑΝΘΥΠΑΤΟΥ ΠΑΤΡ. The workmanship is consistent with mid-first century AD provincial bronze production. |

Nicomedia had been the administrative capital of Bithynia since the Hellenistic period, and its civic coinage under Claudius reflects the province's eagerness to advertise its Roman connections. The proconsul named in the legend, Lucius Mindius Pollio, is otherwise barely attested in the historical record — this coin is among the primary evidence that he held the office at all. Provincial bronzes of this type frequently serve modern historians as the only surviving documentation of a governor's tenure.
