| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central design featuring two tall flaming torches set upright, each entwined by a serpent rendered in relief, their bodies coiling sinuously around the torch shafts. Between the torches stands a small lighted altar, from which flames or smoke rise. This imagery is strongly associated with the cult of Demeter and Kore (Persephone) and reflects Cyzicus's status as a neokoros city honoring the imperial cult. The Greek legend ΚΥΖΙΚΗΝΩΝ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ ('of the Cyzicenes, temple-wardens') runs around the periphery of the reverse field. |
