Æ25 - Maximinus ΠΡΟΥϹΑΕΩΝ

Prusa ad Olympum was a minor Bithynian city whose civic coinage under Maximinus Thrax reflects an administrative peculiarity: Maximinus, a Thracian soldier of low birth who seized power in 235 AD, never visited Rome after becoming emperor and is not known to have traveled through Bithynia. Local mints struck in his name as a matter of imperial obligation, not proximity or patronage. His reign ended when the Senate declared him a public enemy following the revolt of the Gordians in 238 — the so-called Year of the Six Emperors — after which civic issues bearing his name would have been rapidly suppressed or melted.
